Frequently Asked Questions and Suggestions
How do I request information about training?
If you are interested in training, please send us a brief email explaining your interest in Koryu Budo, Shindo Yoshin ryu and previous martial art experience. This does not have to be a long letter but it does have to address you interest in studying a Koryu. Please do not include things such as "being humble", "kneeling and asking permission", "I have so much to learn", etc. These are not things we are looking for. Consider this letter your introduction to a new career that you are looking forward to. Make a good impression.
How do I learn more about Koryu?
We suggest reading the koryu.com website as well as the shinyokai.com website.
What do you look for in perspective members?
We are looking for adults who have a full-time job and are looking to study a Koryu martial art. We do not have the facilities to support children and Koryu can be expensive so being able to meet your financial obligations for classes, training gear, etc. is important. We also look for people who know what they are getting into.
How much does it cost?
Our training fee is $100.00 per month. This money goes to the upkeep of our dojo, workshops and various items related to training. Because of the nature of our Dojo and studies all funds go directly back to the dojo and our practice. In addition, in the first three months your training gear will cost you close to $300.00. This is for a hakama, keiko-gi, bokken and wooden tanto. An additional $400.00 to $1000.00 will be spent by the end of the year for a habikito (real sword with the blade slightly dulled.)
When and where do you train?
Starting in January our "core classes" will be Saturday morning from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM in Whitby. Additional classes in the GTA (Toronto and Mississauga) are planned throughout the year depending on the weather.
Can I watch a class?
After we receive your introduction letter, we will schedule a phone call to discuss your interests. After the call if we feel you are ready to study a Koryu, you will be invited to a class. If you cannot make a class we expect you to notify us. Once you have watched a class and talked with the other members, the current class will determine if you fit the current group and if you are allowed to train as a probationary member of the dojo.
I have no martial art experience. What do I do?
In general, we suggest anyone interested in studying with us have at least 6 months of recent experience in Aikido or Judo. This will ensure you have a basic understanding of group practice and more importantly, an understanding of breakfalls (ukemi). If you have recent experience in other arts, please contact us so we can set expectations.
I live in Toronto and Whitby is far away? Do you have a closer location?
Whitby is 30 to 40 minutes by car, or 1 hour by GO train from Toronto. If you are really interested in the study of Koryu Jujutsu, the commute is not that far.
